What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional intelligence is the ability to effectively identify, use, understand and manage your own emotions and those of other people. (C.J. Wolfe)

The theory of emotional intelligence was developed by John (Jack) Mayer, Ph.D. of the University of New Hampshire & Peter Salovey, Ph.D. of Yale University. In 1990 they wrote an article and in 1997 they defined emotional intelligence as:

The ability to perceive emotions, to access and generate emotions so as to assist thought, to understand emotions and emotional knowledge, and to reflectively regulate emotions so as to promote emotional intellectual growth.

Mayer & Salovey teamed with David R. Caruso, Ph.D., a management psychologist, to develop the first ability-based test of emotional intelligence – the Multifactor Emotional Intelligence Scale.

This is the worlds FIRST and ONLY ability based measure of emotional intelligence.

Can we measure Emotional Intelligence?

What we call emotional intelligence, use to be referred to as “people skills”. Often they were dismissed as soft skills that we could not measure. Not any more! Emotional intelligence is a set of competencies, which can be measured. The approach we use is ability based measured by the Multifactor Emotional Intelligence scale.

Those who have never valued the ability to read people, understand people and understand emotions because these were soft skills and could not be measured will have to rethink their stand. Emotional intelligence is an intelligence, or a set of abilities that CAN be measured.

What sets apart average leaders from the Stars?

“For years, educators, human resource professionals, corporate trainers, recruiters, managers and others have known what sets apart the average performers from the stars. It isn’t technical skills – those are easy to learn, and it’s easy to determine if someone has them or not. It isn’t necessarily intelligence, either. It is something else, something that you knew it if you saw it, but which was difficult to clearly define.

It was people skills.

People skills – we all know what we mean when we say it – or do we? Why have we been so uncomfortable with this term? The term is ambiguous, and it means different things to different people. Plus, it sounds so soft, so mushy.

Our insight into what makes people shine in the workplace has taken center stage. We can retire that soft phrase “people skills” and replace it with an objective, measurable, term – emotional intelligence”.

(D. Caruso, 1999)
